Banned Books Week UK - Get Involved | Cup of Kee

Banned Books Week 2026 - October 4th to October 10th.

Banned Books Week is an annual celebration bringing literature lovers together to celebrate the freedom to read, and to raise awareness of banned and challenged books around the world. So how can you get involved?

Learn About Book Banning & Censorship
In my last blog post I briefly detailed some of the history of book banning and censorship around the world, but it is far too large a topic to neatly pack into one simple blog post. So, this Banned Books Week, do some research into Banned Books and the history of censorship and book banning. I'm sure you will be surprised by what you find... then make sure to tell a friend what you know!

Read a Banned Book
Check your bookshelves for any unread banned books that may be hiding there, or visit your local bookshop and add one or two to your collection.

Join your Local Library
Libraries are vital to our communities, so it's our responsibility to support them and make sure people have access to free books.

Spread Awareness of Banned Books Online
Write a review of your favourite banned book, share your recommendations, use the Banned Books UK hashtags in your posts - whatever you can do to help bring attention to banned and challenged books.

Join a Book Club
My book club Chapters & Chai will be reading a banned book this November, and book clubs are a great way to support bookshops, libraries, and to connect with other book lovers. These communities are so important for keeping the love of reading alive, and to engage in conversations about books - so find your local book club or start one of your own!

Read with Friends
You could host a Banned Books book swap, choose a banned book to Buddy Read, suggest a banned book for your book club, or host your own banned book event!

I'll be posting about banned books on my blog and socials this month, and reading a banned book with Chapters & Chai Book Club this November, so be sure to follow along!
